Transforming Mealtime Stress to Family Connection

From Naima

When I first met this family of four, they were concerned about their 8-year-old’s eating habits—especially his growing pickiness and obsession with sugar. Mealtime had become a battleground, and they worried his limited diet might contribute to chronic health conditions that ran in their family. Their efforts to tightly control sugar intake—such as only offering plain yogurt—were backfiring. Their son was sneaking bags of chocolate chips, and mealtime had become a major source of tension.

We worked on shifting the family dynamic around food. We introduced the Division of Responsibility, where parents provide the food and structure, and kids decide what and how much to eat. This helped reduce pressure and conflict at meals. They began including options their son enjoyed at every meal, so he always had something to eat without negotiating. We encouraged the son’s involvement in meal planning, and his choices, like stir-fry and chicken and rice, pleasantly surprised his parents. We also helped them find a middle ground on sugar, incorporating sweet snacks that also had protein, fiber, and iron, and even finding a flavored yogurt that everyone could agree on. Gradually, the parents relaxed their food rules and began to enjoy meals together again.

Over time, we saw fewer arguments, less food sneaking, and an increase in food variety and balance. Most importantly, mealtimes became a space for connection rather than conflict. The son has regained some of his enjoyment of food, and the parents have begun to trust his choices more. Fostering a positive, relaxed relationship with food can open the door to healthier habits and more harmony at home.

A Neurodivergent Client’s Journey with Binge Eating

From Sarah

When my client first came to Karuna, they had been struggling with binge eating disorder alongside a diagnosis of ADHD. They felt caught in a cycle of shame and frustration, unable to understand why their eating felt so out of control. As we began working together, a powerful shift occurred. By approaching their behaviors with self-compassion and curiosity—rather than judgment—we were able to explore the deeper purpose that bingeing served in their life.

We discovered that binge episodes often emerged during moments of overwhelm, acting as a coping mechanism for unmet emotional and sensory needs. This insight opened the door to meaningful change. We collaborated on strategies tailored to their neurodivergent brain, including sensory grounding tools, body-doubling during meals, and structured routines that supported both emotional regulation and consistent nourishment. Over time, the frequency of binge episodes dropped significantly. More importantly, the client began to feel truly empowered—more in tune with their body, their needs, and their capacity to care for themself with compassion and skill.

Learning to Eat Without Fear

From Cassie

At 23, my client was struggling with anorexia nervosa, weighed down by a deep fear of her body changing and constant anxiety around food. These fears were impacting her life in significant ways—isolating her from loved ones and creating barriers to connecting with others. Restriction felt like control, but it was exhausting—and deep down, she wanted to make peace with her body and her relationship with food.

With steady support, she began to challenge her fears using tools like opposite action, reframing negative food thoughts, and applying nutrition education from our sessions to build trust in her choices. She also embraced intuitive eating principles, especially around making peace with food—learning that no food is off-limits and that all foods can fit in a balanced life. She practiced eating consistently, not as a rule, but as an act of care.

Over time, she began to reconnect with her hunger and fullness cues, trust her body more deeply, and quiet the relentless voice of diet culture. Today, she feels more energized, emotionally grounded, and more able to participate in the life and relationships she was missing. Her story reminds me that recovery is possible—and that reaching out for support can open the door to healing.

How Two Teens Opened Up to New Foods

From Rebecca

Working with teens who are selective eaters has shown me how powerful trust and patience can be in motivating change. I’ve had the privilege of supporting clients who initially came to our sessions with a very limited list of foods they felt safe eating and no interest in trying anything new. Rather than push them beyond their comfort zones, we focused on meeting their nutritional needs with the foods they already accepted—making small, gentle adjustments and removing any pressure to “fix” their eating.

Over time and without prompting, both clients began exploring new foods on their own. One surprised themselves by picking and tasting a vegetable from their mom’s garden—something they had never considered doing before. Another revisited pizza after months of anxiety around it, reclaiming it as a familiar and enjoyable option. These moments weren’t part of a checklist or a structured plan; they emerged naturally as we built a safe, supportive environment. Their progress is a reminder that success in nutrition counseling often comes not from pushing for change, but from creating space for it to unfold on its own terms.
