BDNF Supplements: Do They Work for Brain Health, Mood, or Focus?
If you’ve been looking for ways to support your memory, mood, or ability to focus, you may have come across BDNF supplements promising to give your brain a boost. And when you’re already feeling mentally drained, forgetful, or struggling to concentrate, the idea of one supplement helping your brain work better can sound pretty appealing.
But BDNF is more complicated than a “brain-boosting” ingredient. While research into BDNF benefits is exciting, we’re still learning whether supplements designed to support BDNF translate into noticeable improvements in everyday brain health.
Here’s what we know, and what’s still uncertain.
What Is BDNF Protein?
First, what is BDNF protein, exactly?
BDNF stands for brain-derived neurotrophic factor. It’s a protein produced naturally in the body that helps support the survival and function of neurons. BDNF is also involved in neuroplasticity, or the brain’s ability to adapt and form new connections.
Researchers have become particularly interested in BDNF because of its potential relationship with cognition and mental health. For example, a meta-analysis found lower peripheral BDNF levels among people with depression compared with people without depression.[1] However, researchers also found substantial differences between studies and concluded that peripheral BDNF isn’t currently a reliable biomarker for assessing depression in clinical practice.[1]
In other words: BDNF is important, but a BDNF level alone can’t tell us how well your brain is functioning, or why you may be struggling with mood or focus.
What Are the Potential BDNF Benefits?
Think of BDNF less like fuel for the brain and more like one member of a very large support team.
Its biological roles include supporting neurons and helping regulate processes involved in neuroplasticity. These functions have led researchers to explore potential BDNF benefits related to learning, memory, cognition, mood, and neurological health.
That doesn’t mean, however, that more BDNF automatically equals better mental health or sharper focus.
This distinction matters because supplement marketing can sometimes jump from “BDNF plays a role in brain health” to “increasing BDNF will improve your brain health.” Those are two very different claims, and research hasn’t established the second one so neatly.
What Are BDNF Supplements?
Despite the name, most BDNF supplements aren’t bottles of BDNF protein. Instead, they contain nutrients or plant compounds marketed as helping the body support or increase its own BDNF production.
Researchers have studied several nutritional factors in relation to BDNF, including:
- Omega-3 fatty acids
- Polyphenols and other plant compounds
- Vitamins and minerals
- Probiotics
- Dietary patterns and individual foods
- Other nutritional supplements
A systematic review of 48 controlled human studies examined how different nutritional interventions may affect BDNF concentrations.[2] Researchers found some promising evidence for foods, dietary patterns, and particularly certain polyphenols, but no clear effect across many of the other nutritional interventions studied.[2]
There’s another important limitation: measuring BDNF circulating in the blood doesn’t necessarily tell us exactly what is happening inside the brain. That makes it difficult to conclude that changing a blood marker will translate into a meaningful change in how you think or feel.
Do BDNF Supplements Actually Work?
Right now, the answer is nuanced: some individual ingredients may influence BDNF levels, but we don’t have enough evidence to say that BDNF supplements reliably improve mood, memory, or focus.
Omega-3 fatty acids are a good example.
A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis found that omega-3 supplementation significantly increased serum BDNF levels compared with control groups.[3] A separate meta-analysis of 12 randomized controlled trials involving 587 participants similarly found higher serum BDNF concentrations following omega-3 supplementation.[4]
Promising? Yes.
Proof that an omega-3 supplement or a product labeled “BDNF support” will make you more focused or improve your mood? Not quite.
An increase in serum BDNF is a biological finding. It doesn’t automatically mean someone will experience better concentration, memory, or mental health as a result.
What This Means for You
You don’t need to memorize neuroscience to shop thoughtfully.
If you’re considering a BDNF supplement, look beyond the words on the front of the bottle and ask: What ingredients are actually in this product, at what doses, and what evidence supports those individual ingredients?
This is especially important because the FDA does not approve dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness before they are sold to consumers.[5] A product being available on a store shelf doesn’t necessarily mean its advertised benefits have been clinically proven.
Supplements can also change the absorption, metabolism, or elimination of certain medications.[6]
That doesn’t make supplements inherently “good” or “bad.” It simply means they deserve the same thoughtful, individualized consideration as other parts of your health routine.
Brain Health Is Bigger Than a Supplement
It’s easy for wellness messaging to make you feel as though there’s one missing nutrient, supplement, or habit standing between you and a perfectly functioning brain.
Real life and brain health is much more complex.
Nutrition is one piece of the puzzle. So are sleep, movement, stress, social connection, mental health, your environment, medications, medical conditions, and simply having enough resources and support to care for yourself.
Movement is particularly interesting in BDNF research. A recent meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials found that regular exercise increased peripheral BDNF across neurological and non-neurological populations, although the authors rated the certainty of the evidence as low.[7]
That doesn’t mean you need a new exercise routine designed around “optimizing” BDNF. Instead, it’s another reminder that brain health is connected to whole-person health.
The Bottom Line on BDNF Supplements
BDNF is an exciting area of research, and some nutritional compounds may influence BDNF levels. But we don’t yet have convincing evidence that taking a product marketed specifically as a BDNF supplement will reliably improve your focus, memory, or mood.
If you’re interested in a particular supplement, you don’t have to sort through the research—or the promises on supplement labels—alone. A registered dietitian or healthcare provider can help you look at the actual ingredients, available evidence, medications, nutrition, sleep, stress, and the bigger picture of what may be affecting how you feel.
Sometimes the most useful question isn’t, “How can I increase this one biomarker?” It’s, “What does my brain and body need right now?”
