Exploring the Health at Every Size (HAES) Philosophy

If you’ve ever felt dismissed by a provider who blamed your symptoms on your weight—or if you’ve struggled with shame after being told to “just lose a few pounds”—you’re not alone. That’s where Health at Every Size (HAES) becomes more than just a philosophy—it’s a life-changing framework rooted in dignity, science, and compassion. At Karuna Wellness Studio, HAES isn’t a trend. It’s at the heart of how we care for you.

What Is Health at Every Size?

HAES is a weight-inclusive approach to healthcare and well-being that emphasizes respect for body diversity, intuitive eating, and evidence-based care that isn’t centered on the number on the scale. According to the Association for Size Diversity and Health (ASDAH), the five core principles of HAES include:

  1. Weight Inclusivity: Accepting and respecting the inherent diversity of body shapes and sizes. Also, rejecting the idealizing, stigmatizing, or pathologizing of specific weights.
  2. Health Enhancement: Supporting health policies that improve and equalize access to nutritional information and services. In addition, promoting practices that improve well-being, including attention to individual physical, economic, social, spiritual, and emotional needs.
  3. Respectful Care: Healthcare providers must acknowledge our biases, and work to end weight discrimination, weight stigma, and weight bias. At Karuna, we provide information and services that acknowledge and address the intersectionality of socio-economic status, race, gender, sexual orientation, age, and other identities with weight stigma.
  4. Eating for Well-being: Promoting flexible, individualized eating based on hunger, satiety, nutritional needs, and pleasure in place of externally regulated eating plans focused primarily on weight control.
  5. Life-Enhancing Movement: Support for physical activities that allow people of all sizes, abilities, and interests to engage in enjoyable movement, to the degree that they choose to participate.

Rather than focusing on weight as a measure of health, HAES supports a broader view of holistic well-being without dieting. It’s not about ignoring health—it’s about removing the harmful assumption that thinner always equals healthier.

The Science Behind HAES

Critics often misunderstand HAES as anti-health or anti-nutrition, but research tells a different story. Studies have found that participants following a HAES-aligned approach improved blood pressure, cholesterol, eating behaviors, and psychological well-being—without intentional weight loss (1).

As HAES dietitians, we believe in the importance of fostering long-term, sustainable health outcomes by improving behaviors, not just numbers.

The Real Impact of Weight Stigma

Too often, concerns like joint pain, fatigue, insulin resistance, or even depression get chalked up to weight. This oversimplification not only delays real treatment, it damages trust in healthcare. Research shows that individuals in larger bodies are less likely to seek medical care due to fear of being shamed or dismissed (2)

This bias affects everything from reproductive care to cancer screenings—and it’s why weight-neutral healthcare is so essential. At Karuna, we see the whole person. We know your joint pain might be due to inflammation, misalignment, or nutrient deficiencies—not just your weight.

Addressing Common Misconceptions

“But isn’t weight loss healthy?”

Intentional weight loss can sometimes coincide with improved health outcomes—but those outcomes are usually linked to behavior changes like improved nutrition, increased movement, and better sleep. With HAES, we focus on those same behaviors, but without tying them to weight as a success metric.

“What if I have pre-diabetes or high cholesterol?”

Great question—and this is where HAES and intuitive eating really shine. Research supports using intuitive eating to improve glycemic control and cholesterol (3). Those who practiced intuitive eating were also associated with improved blood pressure and blood lipid levels. Rather than restrictive dieting, we prioritize:

  • Blood sugar-friendly meal planning
  • Stress management tools
  • Gentle movement to support insulin sensitivity

All delivered in a way that honors your body and preferences.

What Weight-Neutral Care Looks Like at Karuna

At Karuna Wellness Studio, we believe ethical nutrition and HAES go hand-in-hand. You’ll never hear us tell you to “just lose weight” to fix your symptoms. Instead, we’ll help you:

  • Explore root causes of symptoms like fatigue, joint pain, or digestive issues
  • Create supportive meal plans that align with your body’s needs and your values
  • Incorporate joyful movement for strength, energy, and stress relief
  • Address conditions like pre-diabetes, high blood pressure, or PCOS through personalized care—not punishment

Whether you’re navigating chronic illness or just trying to feel more energized, HAES provides a compassionate foundation for healing. We blend the principles of HAES with functional nutrition to offer something powerful: care that supports your goals and your humanity.
