Written By: Alysia Vega, RD, LDN
At Karuna Wellness Studio, we believe that wellness starts with nourishing both the body and mind. To support your body, our amazing dietitians are here to offer personalized nutritional guidance. And for nurturing your mind, we’ve created a selection of our favorite nutrition books that offer knowledge and empowerment. These books cover topics such as family and child nutrition, body image, intuitive eating, debunking diet culture and holistic GI support. We encourage you to pick one (or all!) of these books, grab a cozy blanket or warm cup of tea, and start nourishing your mind with these thoughtful reads.
Anxious Eaters, Anxious Mealtimes: Practical and Compassionate Strategies for Mealtime Peace by Marsha Dunn Klein
Chosen by Naima Sullivan, MS, RD
This is a fantastic resource for parents of anxious eaters. It gives thorough and detailed explanations and advice to help families feel successful without using pressure or force. I love that she prioritizes a positive feeding relationship between parent and child.
My First Cookbook: Fun recipes to cook together . . . with as much mixing, rolling, scrunching, and squishing as possible! by America’s Test Kitchen Kids
Chosen by Naima Sullivan, MS, RD
The best kids’ cookbook! Creative recipes using simple ingredients. My daughter loves this book and can make many of the recipes on her own now.
Anti-Diet by Christy Harrison
Chosen by Alysia Vega, RD
Written by Christy Harrison, Anti-Diet explores the negative impact diet culture has had on society as well as physical health and mental and emotional well-being, while challenging popular diet culture myths. This book encourages people to “reclaim your right to eat intuitively” and is a book I love recommending to clients.
Eating in The Light of The Moon by Anita Johnston
Chosen by Sarah Poling, RD
This book explores the emotional and cultural factors behind women’s relationships with food, using myths and storytelling to promote healing and a deeper understanding of eating disorders.
Reclaiming Body Trust: A Path to Healing and Liberation by Hilary Kinavey, MS, LPC and Dana Sturtevant, MS, RD
Chosen by Cassie Wolfe, MS, RD
This book is written by licensed therapist Hilary Kinavey and registered dietitian Dana Sturtevant. It is an incredible book that helps to provide a holistic and powerful framework around beginning the journey to reclaiming and embracing your body. I love that it is written from the perspective of both a therapist and dietitian as it really gets into the work of breaking free from diet culture while also highlighting the broader context of the impact of one’s own life experience on body image. I highly recommend this book for clients and providers!
The F*ck It Diet by Caroline Dooner
Chosen by Kate Thomas, MS, RD
I appreciate the realistic, and somewhat comedic approach to what can be a tough topic for clients.
Mind Your Gut: The Science-Based, Whole-body Guide to Living Well with IBS by Kate Scarlata and Megan Riehl
Chosen by Nicole Celarek, MS, RD
As a practitioner I am so thrilled this book exists. It’s very comprehensive but manageable and filled with so much practical and actionable advice regarding gut health. In a world where misinformation is plentiful, this book provides digestible gut game changers for anyone wanting to better understand their bowels.
Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Anti-Diet Approach
Chosen by Rebecca Riley, RD
I like this book because it helps us learn how to reject the diet mentality, which is prevalent in our society. It helps increase body confidence and trust and decrease the amount of guilt and shame related to food.
The Picky Eater’s Recovery Books by Jennifer Thomas
Chosen by Cindi Powell, MS, RD, CPT
Self help/self care book. Helps to identify ARFID, understand it, implement strategies for its treatment. Easy language and activities to support it.
As you explore these books, we invite you to reflect on how you can apply what you read to your own life, whether that be through intuitive eating, family mealtimes, body trust or overall holistic health.
